Every time I see a CX-3 I think it’s a great looking car, if not a little small.

It’s hard to believe it’s based on the now gone 2, they did so good job laying it out.

From the front, yeah. From the back it looks like an obese midget.

Just about all current Mazdas look great. Though I will say that the CX-9 is the prettiest to me.

The proportions just seem wrong on the back. The hips are just too wide and too tall.

Yes they are terrific looking cars and yes they are impossibly small. See also Honda HRV.

I love these cars... I’m tempted on a daily basis to trade my 128i in for one. They just look so good to me...

CX-3 is waaaayyyy too small. I test drove one when we were shopping for my fiancee’s car. We were looking to lease (she drives super low miles with her short commute) a small awd crossover or hatchback with a good sized back seat that we could use as our “family” car.

The CX-3 back seat and trunk are tiny. I could barely do the “sit behind myself” test in the back seat, my knees were splayed on either side of the driver’s seat. The beltline is way too high, the windows are too small, visibility in all directions sucks.

We ended up with an Impreza Sport Limited hatch. It and the HR-V were our finalists, and both of them have huge back seats for their overall size. HR-V still isn’t getting any lease incentives so would’ve been almost $100/month more for similar equipment and MSRP, so we leased the Impreza.

I can’t remember if I had my head up my ass or not, but I could swear the 2010-gen Chevy Sonic hatch had really great rear room. I adjusted the front seat, and then hopped in the back and was amazed at how much room was still left. The Fiesta by comparison is terrible.

It’s an obese Mazda 3 that’s priced like a 6, right? I’ll pass and would get a 6 wagon instead, while spending a similar amount of money for a vastly better car.

But it's actually based on the never-arrived new 2. Which I would take over this any day, sigh...

The CX-3 is based on the subcompact Mazda 2, the Impreza is a normal compact. I’m not surprised it’s roomier.

They’re in the same price range but yes, the 3 is probably more car for the money.

The segment in which the CX-3 competes here in the US is against the HR-V, Crosstrek/Impreza, Chevy Trax/Buick Encore (a.k.a. Opel Mokka), Fiat 500x, etc. Whatever platform the CX-3 is based on doesn’t matter, it doesn’t fit normal adults in the back seat when the other competing cars do.

I’ll take your word for it, I haven’t tested any of these cars. Having said that, the Subaru is significantly larger on the outside than the CX-3/Encore/HR-V. When the CX-3 is significantly smaller on the inside than the similar sized (on the outside) Encore and HR-V than Mazda did screw up in that department.

The Impreza is 5" longer than the HR-V, but the HR-V is 1.4" wider and 3.4" taller. The HR-V is actually roomier than the Impreza. It’s really smartly packaged.

Compared to the HR-V, the CX-3 is only 0.8" less in length, and yet the back seat of the CX-3 is terrible while the back seat of the HR-V feels like a limousine. The specs are pretty worthless when comparing this, because the CX-3 supposedly has 35" of rear legroom while the Impreza has 35.4". I fit great in the back of our Impreza, and the CX-3, that’s impossible.
